AWWA C906 — PE Pressure Pipe for Water

The waterworks standard North American utilities specify — pressure classes, surge allowances, sizes and what it adds to ASTM F714.

AWWA C906 is the American Water Works Association standard for polyethylene pressure pipe and fittings, 4 in through 65 in, for waterworks. Where ASTM F714 describes the product, C906 describes it for the utility buyer: it fixes the material at PE4710 or PE3608, defines pressure classes for water service, sets the surge allowances, and adds the marking and quality requirements a municipal specification needs. Its small-size companion is AWWA C901, for ¾ in to 3 in service lines.

C906 pipe is rated by pressure class, PC, in psi at 73 °F — PC 200 for DR 11 PE4710, PC 160 for DR 13.5, PC 125 for DR 17, PC 100 for DR 21 — using the same HDB and design factor as ASTM. What the standard adds is an explicit surge rule: recurring surges up to 1.5 × PC and occasional surges up to 2.0 × PC are permitted without derating, because polyethylene's low modulus absorbs pressure transients that would require a higher class in a rigid material. That rule is why PE is chosen for pump-station discharge and long transmission mains with valve-closure events.

Sizes follow IPS or DIPS outside diameters as in ASTM F714, with DIPS common on utility projects because it lets HDPE connect to ductile iron valves and fittings and slip-line existing iron mains. Pipe for potable service must additionally be certified to NSF/ANSI 61 for health effects — a separate listing granted to the compound and the manufacturer, not implied by C906.

We produce C906 pipe in PE4710 from 4 in to 63 in, IPS and DIPS, marked with the standard, pressure class, DR, material designation and production code the standard requires, and can supply the NSF 61 compound listing with the batch certificate. State the pressure class and OD series in the enquiry; the wall thickness follows from them.

Key features

  • 4 in through 65 in; AWWA C901 covers ¾ in to 3 in
  • Pressure classes PC 63 to PC 335 at 73 °F, PE4710 or PE3608
  • Surge allowance: 1.5 × PC recurring, 2.0 × PC occasional, without derating
  • IPS and DIPS outside diameters; DIPS for ductile-iron compatibility
  • NSF/ANSI 61 listing required separately for potable water

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between AWWA C906 and ASTM F714?
F714 is the product specification: dimensions, DR, material and tests. C906 is the waterworks purchasing standard built on it: it restricts the materials, defines pressure classes and surge allowances for water service, and sets marking and certification the utility needs. C906 pipe complies with F714; the reverse is not automatic.
How do C906 pressure classes compare with ISO PN?
Loosely: PC 200 (DR 11) is close to PN16 (SDR 11) and PC 125 (DR 17) to PN10 (SDR 17), but the design factors and reference temperatures differ, so treat them as parallel systems and specify in one or the other. Converting a PN into a PC on paper does not make a metric pipe fit an inch fitting.
Does C906 include the surge in the pressure class?
The pressure class is for steady working pressure. The standard then allows recurring surges to 1.5 × PC and occasional surges to 2.0 × PC on top, without derating — one of the main reasons PE is specified where water hammer is expected.
