Choosing the right HDPE pipe
Three numbers decide almost every HDPE pipe order: the diameter, the SDR, and the standard the project is written to. Diameter comes from the hydraulic design. SDR — the ratio of outside diameter to wall thickness — sets the pressure rating: a lower SDR means a thicker wall and a higher rating, so SDR 11 pipe carries PN16 in PE100 while SDR 17 carries PN10. The standard determines marking, testing and the certificate pack, and it is the thing most often left off enquiries.
Beyond those three, the choices that matter are grade and colour. PE100 is the default; PE100-RC adds resistance to slow crack growth and is worth the premium for trenchless installation where the pipe is dragged over ground rather than laid on a sand bed. Colour and striping are not decoration — blue means potable water and utilities will reject a delivery striped the wrong way.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between SDR 11 and SDR 17?
- SDR is outside diameter divided by wall thickness, so a lower number means a thicker wall. In PE100, SDR 11 is rated PN16 and SDR 17 is rated PN10 at 20 °C. SDR 11 costs more per metre because it uses more material, so specify the highest SDR that still covers your working pressure plus surge allowance.
- How long does HDPE pipe actually last?
- Product standards are built around a 50-year design life at 20 °C at the rated pressure. Service temperature is the main variable: above 20 °C the pressure rating must be de-rated, roughly 0.8 × at 30 °C and 0.6 × at 40 °C. Buried water mains rarely see those temperatures; process lines often do.
- Can you match a pipe standard we already have on site?
- Yes. We produce to ISO 4427, EN 12201, AS/NZS 4130 and ASTM F714. Send the existing pipe marking or the specification clause and we will confirm dimensions, tolerances and marking before production rather than after.
