Thick-wall pipe stacked in the yard, built for abrasive tailings duty

Applications

Mining & Slurry

Tailings, dewatering, process water and reagent lines built for abrasive duty.

Heavy-wall pipe stacked end-on, the thick wall that abrasive slurry duty calls for clearly visible

Mine sites buy on installed cost over life, not on price per metre. Heavy-wall HDPE wins that argument on abrasive duty because it is light enough to install without heavy plant, elastic enough to survive ground movement, and cheap enough to rotate sections and double the line's service life.

We supply SDR 7 to SDR 17 pipe with flanged spools, long-radius bends and the hardware to match, shipped as project packages with a spool schedule.

Key features

  • SDR 7–SDR 17 heavy wall, DN90–DN1200
  • Flanged spools with stub ends and coated backing rings
  • Long-radius bends to reduce erosion at direction changes
  • Rotatable sections to extend line life
  • Spool schedule and site marking for staged installation

Frequently asked questions

How do we estimate service life on abrasive duty?
Wear rate depends on particle size and hardness, velocity and solids concentration, and it concentrates in the invert rather than spreading evenly. The practical approach is a sacrificial wall allowance on top of the pressure-driven wall thickness, plus rotating flanged sections so the worn arc moves. Send the slurry data and we will state the allowance separately from the pressure rating.
Can HDPE handle our operating temperature?
Up to about 40 °C with a de-rated pressure rating — roughly 0.6 × the 20 °C rating at 40 °C. Above that HDPE is usually the wrong material and the line should be steel or lined steel. Process streams coming off a mill are the case that most often rules HDPE out, so check temperature before diameter.
How are long tailings lines joined on site?
Butt fusion for the buried or permanent sections, flanged spools where sections need to be rotated or swapped. Most mine lines end up as a mix: fused where nothing will change, flanged where wear will force intervention. We supply the spool schedule so the site crew knows which is which before the pipe arrives.
